Dominican Republic: Sosua, the Beach, and the Area

Sosua, its beach and the Sosua Bay Area with its tiny beach side shops, streetcafes and discotheques has its very own character. Shortly before World War ll more than 1000 German Jews got political asylum and founded flourishing agricultural businesses here. After the Puerto Plata Airport opened, it rapidly developed into a blooming tourist town. Nowadays almost everything is for sale or for rent here. For short distances there are lots of taxis and cheap motoconchos at your service. Long distance trips can be done by large airconditioned busses. These transport tourists as well as locals to the main cities on the island.

Swimming and diving: The sun takes care of the sunbathers on the gold colored beach of Sosua. One can simply lay down under a palm tree, rent a beach chair or a parasol and order drinks and snacks from the locals. The water is clear and mostly calm. Even just by snorkeling on the nearby reef one can already get a taste of the colorful underwater world. There are also many beautiful coral reefs right in front of the coast. Diving trips can be booked at one of the several diving centers that offers guided dives on a daily basis. Excursions: For those who would like to go and explore the ocean there are catamarans as well as fishing boats that can be rented. For the more adventurous amongst us there are jeep excursions as well as white water rafting excursions that take one through the mountains more towards the center of the island.
